Our History

A Woman’s Concern (AWC) was established in 1992 as an outreach to women vulnerable to abortion. Research, training, and long-term plans were developed and supported mainly by members of the Dorchester Christian Fellowship Church in Boston. In 1993, AWC opened its first office on Dorchester Avenue, placed a $28,000 advertisement in the Boston Yellow Pages, hired a staff, and began to help the many women who called.

Since that time, AWC has grown significantly and now operates five centers in the following communities: Dorchester, Revere, Beverly, Hyannis, and Fall River. In 1999, AWC received a clinic license and built a fully licensed medical clinic in Dorchester one block away from our original location. In 2001, Revere was also converted into a medical clinic. We are currently in the process of relocating our Fall River center and opening our third medical clinic in 2010. The Beverly and Hyannis centers operate as non-medical centers and refer their clients to one of medical clinics for ultrasound services. Our medical team, comprised of doctors, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and radiologists, provide ultrasounds and early pregnancy help for hundreds of women each year who are at risk for abortion. In addition to ultrasound services, our centers provide many other services that offer life-saving help in a life-changing way to women and couples who are facing an unexpected or unwanted pregnancy.

Each center was begun at the invitation of the local pro-life community in recognition of the need to offer life-affirming options to women who were facing an unexpected pregnancy. All of our funding comes from those dedicated to protecting and defending the sanctity of life. We rely on a small staff and a number of volunteers to carry out our mission.

In addition to our pregnancy resource centers, AWC oversees an Abstinence Education Program known as Healthy Futures. In 2002, Healthy Futures received a federal grant and began reaching thousands of middle and high school students throughout eastern Massachusetts with a powerful abstinence until marriage message.
